Former Softbank defector "Cuban Ohtani" is effectively cut from the team - White Sox officially announces, unable to establish himself in the majors
Oscar Colas, an outfielder who defected from his native Cuba to sign with the White Sox after playing for SoftBank Hawks from 2017 to 2019, was effectively released from the team. On the 26th, the team announced that the player had been removed from the 40-man major league roster.
Colas, who was also known as the "Cuban Ohtani" because he once threw a 150 km fastball, focused on batting after going pro. He signed with SoftBank at the age of 18, and was expected to be a big hitter in the future, batting average .278 in seven games, including a home run in his first at-bat against Seibu in August 2019, which was his first-team debut. However, he disappeared after the season ended. It was reported that he defected from Cuba and agreed to a contract with the White Sox in January 2022 for $2.7 million (about 300 million yen at the time).
In his first year in the US baseball world in 2022, he played in 117 games in the minor leagues, batting .314 with 23 home runs and 79 RBIs. As a highly promising player, he was included in the opening lineup in 2023 and made his major league debut, albeit as a substitute. He won the position of starting right fielder, but was demoted to the minor leagues after failing to produce results in the first 25 games with a batting average of .211, one home run and seven RBIs. He was promoted back to the majors in the second half of the season, but barely managed a batting average above 20%, and only hit five home runs in 263 at-bats.
Last season, he only played in 13 games in the majors, but played in 109 games in AAA, finishing with a batting average of .246, 11 home runs, 51 RBIs, 12 stolen bases, and an OPS of .732.
