Shoko Miyata (19), a Juntendo University student who withdrew from the Paris Olympic team in July due to a scandal involving underage drinking and smoking, took part in her first competition since the scandal.
She appeared as the representative of Fukui Prefecture, and when she led her team to victory, she hugged her teammates in joy. Before her first vault, Miyata was in tears, possibly from nervousness. However, she still managed to score 13.300, and despite her nervousness, she led her team. After finishing her floor routine, she was in tears, and even after she was declared the winner, she was unable to contain her emotions.
Although Miyata was underage, he violated the "International Competitive Sports Competition Dispatch Regulations" established by the Japan Olympic Committee and the "Code of Conduct for Japanese National Team Athletes and Officials" established by the Japan Gymnastics Association by drinking alcohol and smoking from the end of June to July. She withdrew from representing Japan in July just before the Olympics began. This tournament was her first competition since the incident and her first in four months since the NHK Trophy in May.
After the competition, she apologized and bowed deeply, saying, "I deeply regret that my actions have caused so much trouble to so many people. I am sorry. I will face this matter sincerely and do my best in my future competitive career." Looking back on the competition, she said, "I was worried about this competition because of my injury, but when I thought of the people of Fukui Prefecture, who have always supported me, and the team members who will be fighting alongside me, I felt that it was my mission to see it through to the end. I'm glad that I was able to complete my task." She continued, "I'm really grateful to have had the opportunity to perform in this wonderful gymnasium. Having so many people calling out to me has given me a positive outlook for the future."
