Ichiro coaches Miyako High School, Okinawa, aiming for the first Koshien on a remote island with an amazing 130-meter shot, including three shots in a row.``The key is to set difficult goals and overcome them.''
Ichiro (50), a former special assistant and instructor to the current Mariners president who played for the US Major League Mariners, visited Miyako High School in Okinawa for two days on the 16th and 17th to provide temporary guidance. This is his fourth year teaching high school students, and this year is his second at Asahikawa Higashi High School in Hokkaido in November.
Miyako High School lost in the semifinals of this summer's Okinawa tournament. As the remote island of Miyako Island aims to play in the ``Koshien'' tournament, Ichiro decided to visit the island with the hope of ``responding to the wishes of the entire island and leaving behind an opportunity that will become the foundation for the future.''
Due to bad weather on the first day, instruction on batting, base running, etc. was held at an indoor sports field. Ichiro teaches hitting while serving as a batting pitcher. He showed passionate coaching, throwing a total of 448 pitches.
On the second day, he gave practical batting instruction at Irabu Stadium. The club members were stunned when he showed off three consecutive pitches over the fence into the right field seats of the stadium, which is 100 meters from both wings. In his final at-bat, he finished off with an estimated 130-meter shot that went over a 20-meter net placed in the right field.
After practice, Ichiro looked back on the two days and summed it up by saying, ``He has more potential than I imagined. He has a lot of potential. He has the stamina as well.'' To the team from a remote island aiming to participate in Koshien, which is a long-awaited goal: ``I think we are at a level where we can say that we are aiming for Koshien. As we continue to clear the themes, we will understand where we stand now. "You won't be able to overcome it just by working hard. The key is to set difficult goals and overcome them."
