Team name announced for figure skating World Team Trophy: "Kanfure" - a fusion of veterans and first-timers. Captain Kaori Sakamoto calls the team "perfectly ripe and fresh."
The Japanese representatives for the figure skating World Team Trophy were announced on the 2nd at TV Asahi headquarters in Tokyo, with the men's representative being Yuma Kagiyama (Oriental Bio, Chukyo University) and Shun Sato (Aim Services, Meiji University), the women's representative being Kaori Sakamoto (Sysmex) and Mone Chiba (Kinoshita Academy), the pairing representative being Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara (Kinoshita Group), and the ice dancing representative being Utana Yoshida and Masaya Morita (Kinoshita Academy).
Captain Sakamoto declared that she wanted the team name to be "Fully Ripe and Fresh, 'Kanfure Japan.'" She explained that this is because the number of players is exactly half experienced players and half first timers (Kagiyama, Chiba, Yoshida, Morita), and enthusiastically stated, "Our goal is to win the championship for the first time in four tournaments, so we want to work hard as a team."
The excitement is building for the Milan-Cortina Olympics coming up next year. At the Paris Olympics last summer, a ceremony was held to award medals that were moved up from the team competition at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. "When we were all given our medals and we looked at them, we said, 'We want to win a better medal color than this one again.' In order to make that happen, we want to be able to say that we had a good result at the World Team Trophy." With the victory at the World Team Trophy for the first time in four tournaments, the team will gain momentum on the dream stage.
